Better Late Than Never?

Posted Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 3:17 PM

Some interesting tidbits in the hotmail mailbag this week. ... Our friend BG has a -- shall I say sarcastic? Oh yeah -- response to one of those corporations, er, excuse me, cooperatives, that want to be treated as people: ... She says, "Wow. I see that Carroll Electric Cooperative (the UNcooperative coop) Corp. has sent out a letter promising it will return to members profits called patronage capital from 1985 and 1986. Gee, it only is taking them 27 years! In their newsletter, Carroll Electric says, 'A check in the mail is always nice, isn't it?' Ya, but, next time could you not wait until we are old and gray? Or maybe you were hoping we would be dead and that letter would be marked 'Return to sender?'"

So, election day is coming up next Tuesday. By then most of us may have come down from the chocolate high we got Saturday at the Inn of the Ozarks which will only get worse after beignets and coffee prior to the Mardi Gras float launch and parade. ... Just the thought of a glut of carbs and noise is making my head ache. What was I talking about? ... Oh, the Valentine Day vote on changing to city administrator form of government, the perfect day for a romantic trip to the polling place ... which brings me to the second letter in my bottomless hotmail mailbag. ... JD writes, "Fact is, since Eureka Springs switched to the Mayor/Council form in 1967, we have yet to have a two-term mayor. Council is a revolving door, with the majority only serving two years. We have tried for over 40 years to make this form work, but anyone who pays attention to Eureka's politics knows it is not working. We unfortunately waste more talent than most cities have."

And that's a fact. And there's apparently a lot of misinformation on the topic floating around containing old facts and figures that don't tell the right story ... so if you're not versed on the issue, get versed. ... Like, before you vote. That guy with the restaurant on Center Street will be happy to answer questions.

I might not be, though, but you can ask me anyway by emailing oliverdeplace@hotmail.com.
