A National Third Party

Posted Sunday, January 8, 2012, at 11:25 AM

Terrorism in America may not be such a problem any more. That is if we continue to be heading toward a country of the second class. Envy is the catalyst of hatred and we have pretty much eroded those feelings across the world except for our home grown wing nuts.

Here's some of what's wrong and why we are losing our standing in world opinion. Our government has shut down progress while it fights over silly issues. The Tea Party candidates that won in 2010 have caught Potomac fever just as the lawmakers they replaced. President Obama lost his nerve soon after taking office and has wallowed in compromise for the rest of his term. The 2012 Republican candidates are the saddest bunch to ever run for the Presidency. Exceptions are Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman, but they are too bright to be chosen by the Tea Party and evangelical followers.

It is definitely time for a third party in this country. If not now...when? If we have the guts to form another party, we must work to create it with even balanced, rational and intelligent people. A third party needs to be free of religious wing nuts. It needs to respect women as viable candidates. It needs to welcome all races and ethnic groups and religion should not be important. This party needs to be a party for all the reasonable people in this country.

Then, we Americans who can't tolerate the Presidency being bought by Big Government PACs or Religious Extremist PACs will finally have a party that fits OUR ideals. This new party may very well fit the notions of our founding fathers, as well. It would be a party of average people, by average people and for average people. It would represent the 99% and the other one percent can vote for someone else.

It could be named the National Party or the Pioneer Party or the Continental Party. I like the Pioneer Party probably for its alliteration, but mostly because it describes our spirit to forge ahead. It could be known as "balanced" rather than "conservative" or "liberal". This could be the political scene of the future. Hop on and make a real third party happen.

As Benjamin Franklin correctly observed: In a republic we get what we collectively deserve. We have a corrupt and incompetent two party system because that's exactly what we (collectively) want. That is to say, we have met the enemy and the enemy is (collectively) us.

I'm Enid. No, not the town in Oklahoma, but a transplant to Eureka Springs from Minneapolis fourteen years ago. I'm a writer, journalist and sometime artist. My real love is expressing my opinions on almost any subject, as you have seen in my many letters to the Editor of The Lovely County Citizen over the years. Now, I'm happy to say that I will be writing a blog titled In a Twist for your amusement, amazement or commiseration. Thanks for giving me a read.
