Revisiting Unfinished Buisness

Posted Sunday, February 19, 2012, at 3:51 PM

The Eureka Springs Council needs to revisit much old business and actually work, not pospone again, or schedule a work shop where noting is done.

Awhile back there was a "Demolition by Neglect" law passed in Eureka. There are several structures that qualify but nothing has been done. I reiterate: 11 Magnetic, the stucco house behind Ice Cream Delights and the artist, Doc's, old house on North Main Street. Do something about these dangerous buildings or take the law off the books.

The sign ordinance was mentioned for retesting as it floated to the top of the curdled milk in the council's pail, but again, nothing has been done. Bart Rockets' sign is still on Passion Play Road plus many more closed businesses' advertizing remain on our byways. If the council really wanted to make just one outstanding decision during their tenure, removing these outdated and misleading advertisments would be great for tourism. If that decision is too taxing, then abolishing the large billboards down Planer Hill and anywhere in the historical district would be much appreciated. I'm talking "The Onyx Cave" board, especially.

Finally, there is the continued lack of handicapped parking spots on Spring Street and throughout the town. Only two spots are available for the disabled on Spring Street. One spot, across from Basin Park is now finally free of a local hotel employee, however, the spot near the Pendergrass Corner is often used by a merchant with a shop in the area and a disability that comes and goes. Indeed, parking in general remains a problem for Eureka without having Spring Street merchants and employees using the few spaces we have for their own convenience.*

I ask the council to tend to unfinished business rather than filibuster to justify their private agendas.

*According to the Lovely County Citizen's latest issue of February 16, 2012, the Handicapped Parking Ordinance will have its third reading at the February 27th meeting. I can only hope there will be a time limit on all the handicapped spots of two hours and that these spaces are checked regularly to keep scofflaws out of them.

I'm Enid. No, not the town in Oklahoma, but a transplant to Eureka Springs from Minneapolis fourteen years ago. I'm a writer, journalist and sometime artist. My real love is expressing my opinions on almost any subject, as you have seen in my many letters to the Editor of The Lovely County Citizen over the years. Now, I'm happy to say that I will be writing a blog titled In a Twist for your amusement, amazement or commiseration. Thanks for giving me a read.
