The Righteously Misinformed

Posted Sunday, February 26, 2012, at 10:54 AM

Rick Santorium has made a pronouncement that the President's faith is a "phony theology". Santorium has also said, "President Obama "says" he's a Christian, so I guess I believe him." Notice the sarcasm. It's hard to miss.

Santorium, the Tea Party's (TP) latest "fav", is a Roman Catholic. What in the world would he know about anyone else's religion? I submit that most people know next to nothing about other religions other than their own and even that's debatable.

Unless Santorium took a religious survey class in college, he probably doesn't even know the history of his own faith. Yet he has the nerve to classify the President's beliefs.

Does Santorium know what the Mormon faith is about? Does Santorium know what Newt Gingrich believes or Ron Paul, for that matter? I doubt it. However, he can make a sweeping statement without any proof.

That's why our founding fathers did not want us mixing up religion and politics. As Thomas Jefferson maintained, we must keep a strong wall between faith and government. The TP fashioned their movement after the rebels of our revolution of 1776, however, they didn't keep religion off the table. Instead, they made it the central point of their existence which colors everything they support.

Religion is just not important when electing a president. Ethics are important. A conscience is important. Empathy and fairness are important. After all we don't want a sociopath for our president. However, we may have had more than one president in the recent past who claimed he was a Christian.

Richard Nixon was a Quaker. Lyndon Johnson was a Disciple of Christ. Bill Clinton is a Baptist, and George W. Bush is a United Methodist. See what you get when all you worry about is religion.

And one more thing, I did not read a peep out of you (or many others) when then-candidate Obama made his snide, off-hand remark about certain white Americans "clinging to their guns and religion." Why weren't you the first to sound off on what a totally insensitive comment that was, or how much lack of understanding of others' religion he exhibited, or how he should try to learn more before "making a sweeping statement without any proof."?????? That's why you have no cred.......all you have going for you is your extreme bias and more's the pity.

Enid, you making the comment about someone making "sweeping statements without any proof" is the most virulent case of the pot calling the kettle black that I've seen. That's all you and your cohorts do at the LCC and it's always extremely one-sided. Who cares what any of these peoples religious beliefs are or are not? This is America and they are entitled to believe what they like, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THEY AGREE WITH YOU OR ME!!! For crying out loud, buy a clue here and practice the tolerance you are so fond of espousing. Besides, you cannot say with ANY degree of certainty how much they know or understand about other religious groups because, quite simply, you do not know (and it bothers you, doesn't it? So you just make stuff up about them in place of making any serious effort to find out). Tch, tch, tch. It matters most what people DO; because I daresay there isn't a one of us, myself included, that does not have some nutty, wacky, idiosyncratic point of view about something. We get it Enid, you're hung up on anyone with religion, so how about giving it a rest? There are much more meaningful, serious issues to be considered........or are you just running out of fresh material?

As Stephen Hawking has correctly observed, primitive instincts (greed, selfishness, tribalism, etc) that were once an asset for our survival as a species are still within us and are now a liability to our survival as a species.

Organized religion is symptom of, and predicated on, those same primitive instincts; tribalism, authoritarianism, and submission (the preacher and his flock.) The result being, "My tribe is better than your tribe. We deserve to survive and you don't." We observe the manifestation of this primitive survival behavior at the annual cleaning and dusting of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, wherein the authorized followers of Jesus beat on each other with brooms and other assorted housekeeping instruments.

It has been my observation over the decades that many Christians are filled with hate and anger. Mel Gibson and Rick Santorum certainly appear to be in this category. The thought of such a person having access to launch codes is somewhat chilling. But again, for a person who is a true believer and believes that the end times are near, such a candidate might be just the ticket.

I'm Enid. No, not the town in Oklahoma, but a transplant to Eureka Springs from Minneapolis fourteen years ago. I'm a writer, journalist and sometime artist. My real love is expressing my opinions on almost any subject, as you have seen in my many letters to the Editor of The Lovely County Citizen over the years. Now, I'm happy to say that I will be writing a blog titled In a Twist for your amusement, amazement or commiseration. Thanks for giving me a read.
