Join Hobbs State Park - Conservation Area interpretive naturalist, Steve Chyrchel and docent Diane Gately as they take you on free tours of the Historic Van Winkle Hollow. The trail head is located on Hwy 12, 11.5 miles east of the railroad tracks in Rogers. The Van Winkle trail is easy at Y2 mile in length and handicapped accessible. Restrooms on site.
During the 1870's, Peter Van Winkle ran the largest sawmill in the entire state of Arkansas. Wood from the Van Winkle mill was used to construct many of the Victorian-type houses we still see today in Fayetteville, Bentonville, and Eureka Springs. The majority of the wood used in the construction of Old Main at the U of A also came from this mill as well.
The Van Winkle Mill Site was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Tours will be both this upcoming Saturday and Sunday, April 12th and 13th. Tours will begin at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 am., noon, and 2:00 p.m. both days. Individuals, families, and interested groups are all welcome. No reservations required |
