Small, slow and local (01/13/09)
When did time accelerate? When did food become fast food? When did time sitting on the back porch become time rushing to the next thing? When did we stop playing dominos with our children? We are all scrambling to find more hours in our days and more days in our weeks. ...

Once in a while, say once a year, a farmers' market patron will walk to my table and make a comment about my vegetable prices being too high. Food prices are a big component of the American food landscape as it impacts the way people buy food and eat. Price evolution is also a major aspect of the late small-scale farming "renaissance" to which I will include my farm...
Small, Slow and Local (08/13/08)
As I boarded my flight for France, I found myself, at last, in a reflective mood. Much around us is shifting, yet our speedy lifestyle often conceals those changes from plain view. It takes a trip far away to realize how the landscape is evolving. With energy prices and closely related food prices shooting up, deep-set social patterns are showing wear. ...

I apologize for not being at the last council meeting to represent our town's Farmers' Market. I did not know it was on the agenda.   Four years ago we joined a food revolution which is changing the way America is eating and connecting to its farming community -- we started a Farmers' Market. The market was located on Planer Hill and was a smashing success for its birth year. The owner at the time decided to list the property and we had to vacate...
Small, Slow and Local (02/20/08)
As I read the CAPC resolutions for 2008 in its support of various local efforts, I had two thoughts (therefore I am).   One is how prolific and energetic our small community is. New projects are born it seems everyday. Some go on and gather speed and others fade away. But as a whole, we thrive on a fare of localism: a full buffet of art, recreation and, of course, food and wine...
Small, Slow and Local (12/19/07)
(Small) size matters. Big companies, big cities, big farms all fail to deliver the goods -- health, peace and happiness.   Large companies try hard to bond their workforces with a "vision," or a "philosophy" but, in the end, they base their decisions on the growth of quarterly earnings and market share. ...
DOWN AND DIRTY (08/08/07)
As the heat mounts, gardeners retreat indoors and the bounties of summer slowly regress to leave fields of roasting plants gasping for moisture. NOT! Late summer gardening can be as lively as early spring, albeit requiring more energy and technical prowess. A visit to any of our farmers' markets (Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to noon at Pine Mountain Village) will prove my point as our growers spread a lavish multitude of vegetables and flowers...
