Lorayne B. Shimp

Lorayne B. Shimp, age 83  of Hamilton, Ill., died Oct. 24 at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. She was born on Jan. 17, 1923 in Traer, Iowa, the daughter of John O. and Iva Morrison Beckman.

She married Martin Shimp on Feb. 5, 1944 at Moody Field in Valdosta, Ga. The Shimps celebrated 62 years of marriage. He survives in Hamilton.

Additional survivors include: two daughters, Patti (and Ron) Starr of Nauvoo, Ill. and Sally (and Gene) Henderson of Hamilton, Ill.; five grandchildren, Matthew (and Susan) Starr of Ottawa, Ill., Magen (and Jon) Eller of Cary, N.C., Kathleen Starr of Raleigh, N.C. and Anna and Kyle Henderson of Hamilton, Ill.

Shimp attended Iowa Teachers College, now Northern Iowa University, in Cedar Falls, Iowa until her marriage. She moved to Naperville, Ill. and resided there while raising her family. She worked in the tax assessors' office in Naperville Township for 20 years, 15 of which she served in the elected position of tax assessor.

She and her husband retired to Eureka Springs in 1979 where she was active in church leadership, Bible study, Golden Girls and several volunteer positions. Her passing leaves many, many friends in Eureka Springs. The Shimps moved to Hamilton in 2002 to be near her daughters and their families.

She was a member of Golden's Point Christian Church and was active on the Social Concerns Committee. She had also been active as a Memorial Hospital Gift Ship volunteer and enjoyed Bible study, Tri-State Women's Connection, Keossippi Kickers line dancing and aquasize at the YMCA. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held on Oct. 28 at Golden's Point Christian Church. A fellowship meal and visitation with the family followed the service.

The family request memorials in memory of Lorayne B. Shimp be established for Tri-State Family Services or Golden's Point Christian Church. Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton, Ill. is in charge of arrangements.
