Life's a stretch. be flexible.

Wednesday, September 5, 2007
What is it exactly that allows amputees to find the momentum to win marathons while the rest of us sit around waiting for life to happen? How is it that Lance Armstrong can win the Tour De France six times after a cancer diagnosis, one of which he won with a broken collar bone, yet most of us are so convinced of our meager limitations that we never leave the couch?

Have you ever stopped to think that all of us are diagnosed with a terminal illness? That each day could be the last day we enjoy our faculties or limbs or even our life? The only difference is that most of us are in such denial about our impending demise, we walk along as if we have boundless time to gain control over our actions.

Those who, through tragedy, have been forced to face the nitty gritty of who they really are, have had the opportunity to recognize their own spectrum of possibility and found out something that is true for all of us. We are more than the sum of our stuff and we hold the capacity for infinite potential.

We have few absolutes -- death and impermanence. As much as we would like to think we will forever have whatever measure of success we now enjoy, i.e., the car, job, spouse, figure, etc … the indisputible fact is that change is inevitable and our time here is limited. So what are we going to do?

Awareness of having an option is where it all begins. It's the proverbial acorn.

Quantum physics states that thought and information create and transform matter. First you have an idea (there are tons of these) or at least accept something into the realm of possibility before acting on it and making it a reality (a few people get this far). Then there are the minority, the upper echelon of achievement; the individuals who have the ability to stay the path against all odds and walk toward their goal, into their own potential.

These rarities only differ from you and me in that they did it instead of just talking about it. When we discover a level of consciousness that taps into our soul self and can turn our attention from asking what we want of life to "what does life want of me?" we can then influence great change.

Yoga is about bringing a level of awareness to influence change in a creative direction and doesn't require you to reach rock bottom before your ascent.

Physically we experience neuromuscular reeducation. We teach our muscles to function correctly and efficiently within a symmetrical framework. We gain control over our own bodies and bring awareness to posture, breath and mental states.

Eventually we start to experience cognitive reframing. Our brain shifts to a state of clarity. A place from which we can recognize the capacity of our own limitless nature and know that stepping toward that glowing goal is a very real option. In fact, once awareness strikes, inaction ceases to be an option. Creation and transformation start here.
