St. Pat's Day 'Luck of the Irish' fun in Eureka

Monday, February 25, 2008

Eureka Springs isn't known as a center of Irish culture, but any excuse for a parade and a party will do just fine.

So be sure to find your way downtown at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, March 15. You can watch the parade from any vantage point along Spring Street, but Basin Park is always a center of festivity.

The celebrations will honor Eureka's 15th Annual St. Paddy Parade, initially founded by Archie Ryan. Dignitaries include Carroll County Sheriff Bob Grudek as Grand Marshal and Miss Holly Wilkerson as Colleen.

Because Easter Sunday falls so early in the calendar this year, the traditional date of St. Patrick's Day, March 17, would fall in the Holy Week preceding Easter. In resolution, Irish bishops moved St. Patrick's Day 2008 to Saturday, March 15. Church authorities reportedly spent weeks debating this quandary. This marks the first time the date has been changed since 1940. The next conflict with Holy Week is not expected until 2160.

For the hard-core revelers, a Pub Crawl is planned for Monday, March 17, beginning at 4 p.m.
