Pam Ernst, author of Arkansas Dayhikes for Kids and Families, mentions in her book that April is an especially good month for hiking. Temperatures are pleasant, waterfalls are flowing freely, and wildflowers are in bloom.
Dogwoods and redbud trees bloom in the understory, as the bigger trees in the canopy spread their leaves. Hikers will see the Ozarks in a way not available to other travelers.
Here are some possibilities:
Dogwood Trail, near Beaver Dam
This trail covers two miles of steep terrain, with lots of dogwood trees, which flower in early to mid-April. Although the trail is rated as difficult, the views are great, and the trail goes past a large bluff shelter.
War Eagle Trail Forest Trail and Dogwood Loop Withrow Springs
The War Eagle Trail is very popular, about two miles round trip, with moderate difficulty. It follows War Eagle Creek. The route includes a small cave and a scenic overlook atop a high bluff.
The Forest Trail hike is 2.5 miles round trip, and it may be a little long for some kids, but it's not a loop, so you can turn around and double back at any time.
The trail starts with an uphill stretch, but then levels out for a nice trek through the woods. This trail is especially rewarding during dogwood season.
Dogwood Loop is about three-quarters of a mile. It starts out somewhat steep, but is short enough for anyone.
Withrow has a swimming pool, picnic tables, and campsites. The phone number for the Park Superintendent is (479) 559-2593
Shaddox Hollow Loop Hobbs State Park
This state park is located between Eureka Springs and Rogers. From Arkansas Highway 12, take Arkansas Highway 303 North.
The hike is a 1.5 mile loop, with nice scenery, lots of bluffs and streams, an abundance of flora and fauna. There is also a great view over Beaver lake
Lost Valley Buffalo River headwaters
The Buffalo River area has some spectacular hikes, but this one is relatively short and has a lot of features along the way. Most parts of the hike are suitable for all ages. See article, page 20.
