McKenzie earns degree from Hendrix

  Colin McKenzie of Eureka Springs received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business from Hendrix College during the May commencement exercises. McKenzie is the son of Dr. Kathleen McCune of Eureka Springs.

  U.S. District Judge William R. "Bill" Wilson of Little Rock, a Hendrix alumnus and a member of the college's Board of Trustees, delivered the commencement address.

  Hendrix College, founded in 1876, is an undergraduate liberal arts college emphasizing experiential learning in a demanding yet supportive environment. The college is among 165 colleges featured in the 2008 edition of the Princeton ReviewAmerica's Best Value Colleges. Hendrix has been affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1884. Emanuel Keck Abell
Emanuel Keck Abell graduates from Annapolis

  U.S. Navy Ensign Emanuel Keck Abell , son of David and Mary (Keck) Abell of Fairfax, Virginia, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD on May 23rd, 2008, and was commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. Ensign Abell is the grandson of Warren and Eugenia Keck of Eureka Springs.

Ensign Abell successfully completed four years of intensive academic, physical, and professional training, resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree with a

major in History. As a graduate of the Naval Academy, Ensign Abell completed a four-year, total immersion program where a strong, balanced academic program, focused on the educational needs of the Navy and Marine Corps, is superimposed on a strict, professional military training environment emphasizing the development of leadership skills.

  Following graduation, Abell has been assigned to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, where he will begin training as a Naval Flight Officer. Upon completion of training he will be assigned to an operational squadron.

  Considered one of the top institutions in the country, the U.S. Naval Academy

was founded in 1845. The Academy has graduated more than 74,000 men and

women. Its graduates have included 4,000 Admirals and Generals, one President, 200 members of Congress, five Governors, 73 Medal of Honor recipients, two Nobel Prize winners, and 52 Astronauts.

  The Naval Academy has more than 4,000 students who comprise the Brigade of Midshipmen and who come from every state in the union.

Local Garden Contest winners announced

  The winners of the local garden contest were announced at a reception for the America in Bloom judges at Lake Leatherwood. 25 volunteers served as judges for the local contest. There was a total of 85 participants in this year's contest. The winners are:

The Bank of Eureka Springs at Holiday Island to hold AARP Drivers Safety course

  The Bank of Eureka Springs at Holiday Island will be holding an AARP Driver's Safety course on June 19. Formerly known as AARP 55 Alive, it is now known simply as "AARP Driver's Safety Class." It is usually taught in two four-hour increments; however, this particular class is a four-hour class designed for those who cannot attend two four-hour sessions.

  Upon completion of this class, Arkansas state law prescribes a rebate from your insurance company for those students over 50; therefore you will save money on your car insurance, and you actually may learn something new that could save your life.

  The date is June 19, the cost is $10, and the hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For class registration, contact Judy at the Bank or call the instructor Dale Bates at 363-9320. Class size is limited so cal early for your seat.

EUU to present Val Gonzalez

  The Eureka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host Val Gonzalez, the Adult Program director at Just Communities of NW Arkansas on Sunday, June 1, at 11 a.m., at 17 Elk Street. Gonzalez' program entitled "Cultural Impact on Communication" will ask the question, How does "where we come from" (in all senses) have to do with how we communicate?

CC libraries launch summer reading program

  Join "Catch the Reading Bug!" this summer at the Berryville, Eureka Springs, and Green Forest Public Libraries and discover the amazing world of insects. The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool though young adult, with programs, story hours, a reading club, and more. Families are invited to join the Read-to-Me portion of the program. A complete list of summer programs is available at all three Carroll County libraries. Registration begins across the county on Monday, June 2 in your local public library. First Christian to start Summer Series Sunday school

  First Christian Church in Eureka Springs is starting a high impact Summer Series Sunday school class that is designed to enhance the Christian believer's understanding of God and His Bible. Topics will include: An Overview of the Bible's Organization and Authority; Understanding God A Little Better; What About Satan?; and What Does It Mean To Be Saved?. It promises to be focused, flexible and fun. The instructor, Steve Hudson, has an informal, down-to-earth style.

  The lessons will start on Sunday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. and end at 10:15 a.m. and will cover a 12-week span. To reserve a spot call 253-8015.

Main Stage announces summer schedule

  Main Stage Creative Community Center has announced their summer 2008 schedule, which includes two new "camp style" programs designed exclusively for children of tourists, and expanding two existing programs to make them accessible to tourists as well as local residents.

The new Drop-In Art classes last either two or four hours and are for ages 7-12. This 10-week Art Camp has been re-designed to include theater/performance elements and is set up to allow children to attend for a day or a week with no pre-registration, instead of enrolling for the entire session.

  The Drop-In classes are scheduled for June 9 to August 15 Monday - Friday. Parents may drop their children off for two-hour or five-hour sessions without advance registration. The Drop-In classes will be offered at Main Stage from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

  Theater Camp and Art Camp are intensive, hands-on, 6 and 10 week programs. Theater Camp is scheduled for June 9-July 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday -- Friday.

  This year's Theater Camp is entitled "Shakespeare Eureka Style!" and will be led by instructor Chris Rose at The Gem in the City Auditorium. Participants will begin by voting on which Shakespearean play they will present. They will then spend weeks perfecting the theory and method of performance art, learning the technical aspects of theater, and preparing a public performance of the play at The Gem.

  The "Drop-In" Art Camp will be taught by Melanie Linker and Vicki Rose. Additionally, guest artists will be featured to demonstrate their expertise in specific areas.

  Enrollment for the 6 week Theater Camp is $300, or $50 per week. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. Scholarships are available for qualifying families. Drop-In classes cost $30 for 5 hours (plus $4 lunch, optional), or $15 for 2 hours. For more details, contact Vicki Rose at Main Stage, 479-253-8060.

Metafizzies to make shrines

  On Monday, June 2, The Arkansas Metaphysical Society will host Ralph Wilson and Kathleen McCleod for an evening of metaphysical shrine making. Shrine material will be supplied for a nominal donation of $5.00 Participants are asked to bring photos, momentos, written phrases, anything of importance to them to create a shrine to higher thought and to contact Marsha Havens at 363-9600. The program is at 68 Mountain St. at 6:30 p.m.

CC Democratic Women to meet

  The Carroll County Democratic Women meets the first Tuesday of each month. The June meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. in the Berryville Fire Station located at 400 N. Main. All interested Carroll County women are invited and encouraged to attend.

$5.00 Bag Day to begin in Eagle Rock Doggie Shop

  The Good Shepherd Humane Society Doggie Thrift store in Eagle Rock is bringing back $5.00 bag day. It will be on the same days as the Eureka Springs Doggie Shop. First and third Tuesday of each month. The Eagle Rock store is located on Hwy. 23 North after the Missouri state line, on the right before the Hwy. 86 intersection.

Grassy Knob Volunteer Fire Department to hold meeting

  The annual meeting of the Grassy Knob Volunteer Fire Department will be held on Saturday, June 7, at the Grassy Knob Community Center, 12307 Highway 187. Annual Magnetic Spring Road Cleanup needs volunteers

  Volunteers will meet at the Magnetic Spring Atrium on Sunday, June 8th at 5:00 p.m. to pick up trash along both sides of the road until dark. Rubber gloves and plastic bags will be supplied. Please wear something brightly colored and spray your ankles, etc. The road will be officially closed at both ends for safety sake. Any questions call 253-2255.

Lunch & Learn to feature Dr. Robert Trovillion

  The Lunch & Learn program presented by the Eureka Springs Hospital on Monday, June 16, will feature Dr. Robert Trovillion to speak on "Diabetic Neuropathy and Common Foot Deformities (Hammertoe, Bunions, etc.)"

  This free program will be presented at 12 Noon at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center. RSVP reservations are required by Sunday, June 8. Call Anna Ahlman at 253-4034.
