Churning up the trails

Check out the Fat Tire Festival for the cutting edge in mountain bike racing and stunts.

The Fat Tire Festival, held July 18-20, offers cyclists a variety of ways to pursue their two-wheeled passion.

The fat fun starts at noon on Friday, and lasts until the final awards ceremony at Lake Leatherwood at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be a mix of competitive and non-competitive events, with enough variety to appeal to anyone who finds pleasure in pedaling. The events will include downhill and short track races, a children's race, observed trials, and the cross-country Race to the Lake.

There will be some changes in the course layouts this year, but one thing won't change: this will still be a challenging and enjoyable event for participants and spectators alike.

The fat fun spills over into the after hours, too. Friday night's "after party" will be held at Sparky's, and on Saturday, the Observed Trials Awards and an after party will be held at the Pied Piper.

Mountain bikes are catching on with outdoor enthusiasts everywhere, and the trails around Lake Leatherwood and elsewhere in Eureka Springs are some of the best around. The Ozarks Off Road Cyclists made these trails possible, and they share these trails with everyone during the annual Fat Tire Festival.

This is the largest event of its kind in the central United States. A full schedule of events is available at www.fattirefestival.com.
