Eureka Kids offers 'Laptops for Education'

  Eureka Kids second year of its "Laptops for Education" program will begin on July 7. To be eligible to receive a free laptop, you must be a student, a senior or a family with young children with no computer at home.

  If you signed up for a computer during the first program and would like to remain on the list, simply update by calling 239-4553. All names on the waiting list will be deleted on July 7 if not updated.

  The computers are used, late model working computers, including P3 and better laptops and P4 and better desktops.

  Eureka Kids is now accepting donations of these types of machines, LCD monitors and USB accessories. Sponsors and donors are needed.

  To participate in this, or any other Eureka Kids program, come by Eureka Kids in Harmon Park. Membership at Eureka Kids is $20 per person each year or $60 annually for a family. Membership provides access to all Eureka Kids programs and services.

Time to make Yard Sale plans

  The Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its 14th annual Yards and Yards of Yard Sales, Aug. 1 and 2, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  Stop by the Chamber of Commerce office in Pine Mountain Village to sign up. Registration is $15 and if you sign up by 5 p.m. on July 21 you will be guaranteed placement on the official Yards and Yards of Yard Sales map. For details, call the Chamber at 253-8737.

  Advertising space is available on the back of the map for purchase. The map is distributed to participating businesses and visitors in the week leading up to the sale event.

ES Garden Club selects new president

  Brooks Cloninger was recently elected president of the Eureka Springs Garden Club for the year beginning June 2008. Other officers elected include: vice-president Ginni Miller; secretary Frances Davilla; and treasurer Ruth Morrison.

  The Garden Club is in its 62nd year. While membership is limited to 25 members, the members undertake a wide variety of projects that support their goal of beautifying and improving the quality of life in Eureka Springs. The club hosts a yearly plant sale, which allows it to support projects in Eureka. Currently, the club has seven long-term projects.

Arbor Day Foundation offers tree identification guidebook

  The Arbor Day Foundation is offering a new tree identification guidebook that is easier to use and will help an average person identify trees in a simple, step-by-step process.

  What Tree Is That? features full-color, hand-drawn botanical illustrations of the distinctive characteristics of America's most popular trees.

  To obtain a guidebook, send your name and address and $5 for each guide to What Tree Is That?, Arbor Day Foundation, Nebraska City, NE 68410. You can also order a book online at www.arborday.org.

St. John's July classes and support groups

  St. John's Hospital in Berryville will offer a variety of classes and support groups during July. The classes will include:

* Childbirth on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 7, 14, 21, 28 and a Saturday, full-day session on July 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (870) 423-5217 to register,

* "Living On" Grief Workshop sponsored by Hospice Care on Wednesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 22, 30 and Aug. 6 in the Medical Conference Room from 1 to 2:30 p.m. There is no fee. Call (870) 423-5255 to register.

* Arthritis Self-Help Course on Tuesdays, July 8, 15, 22 and 29, in St.John's Hospital Day Room from 6 to 8 p.m. Fee of $10 includes course book. Contact Jana Putman (888) 625-9930.

Support Groups

* Stroke Support Group on Thursday, July 3 from 6 to7 p.m. at the St. John's Hospital Day Room. For details, call (870) 423-4150.

  Additionally, the AARP Driver Safety program will be offered on Thursday, July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Medical Arts Building Conference Room. Call (870) 423-5244 to register.

Rock-O-Rama at the Carnegie

  Children are invited to join author and artist Lin Wellford for a program about the art of rock painting and take home a rock critter creation of their own. Wellford will be at the Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library on Monday, July 7 at 9:30 a.m. This program is open to children six years old and older.

  Since 1978, Wellford has been turning river-tumbled rocks into animals of all kinds, from little wild rabbits to foxes, fawns, raccoons and every breed of cat imaginable. Wellford's appearance is part of the summer-long library program for children called, "Catch the Reading Bug." For details, call 253-8754.

CC Democrat Women to meet

  Carroll County Democrat Women will meet the second Tuesday of this month. The July meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 8 at 7 p.m. in the Berryville Fire Station Dining Room located at 400 N. Main. All interested Carroll County women are invited and encouraged to attend.

Travel Club to meet

  The Bank of Eureka Springs Travel Club will meet Wednesday, July 9 at 3 p.m. at the Holiday Island Financial Center and discuss the Rockies Rail Tour on Oct. 8 through 15.

Bugtastic Singing coming to library

  Singer and performer Karen FitzPatrick will be a guest at the Eureka Springs, Berryville and Green Forest public libraries on Monday, July 14. She invites children for a wiggling, scratching, itching and singing good time with bug songs, bug dancing and bug jokes.

  FitzPatrick, lead singer with The Ariels, has performed for adults and children for many years. She will begin her tour at the Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Berryville Public Library at 11:30 a.m. and ending at the Green Forest Public Library at 2 p.m.
