Main Stage appreciates community support

Editor:

If you had a chance to attend Main Stage's production of Macbeth Friday night at the Auditorium you got to see the successful finale of our first youth summer theater camp.

A great number of dedicated hands helped put this effort together. The children and staff of Main Stage appreciate the total Eureka Springs community for its continuing support and recognition.

Thanks to Parks & Rec.

Dear Editor:

I try to watch the televised meetings of the various city commissions and council when I get the chance. I happened to catch the meeting of the Parks & Rec. Commission last week and wanted to write in to commend Director Levine and the people working for him on the excellent work they are doing for our city.

Not only has Parks & Rec given us a world-class skate park, but now we have recycle barrels and new paving in Lake Leatherwood Park.

Meanwhile our city parks are kept in beautiful shape, and of course let's not forget the outstanding gardening efforts of DonE Allen!

And while all the work at Black Bass Dam has gone more slowly than some might prefer, it's happening, and soon it will be done, another feather in the cap of our wonderful city. There will be new parking (including handicapped accessible areas), a lovely hiking trail, etc.

It is easy to pick out some point where we feel we could do better, if we were in charge, as some do -- that's a downside of being a public employee -- but armchair quarterbacking aside, and considering the scope of Director Levine's job, I feel we, as citizens, ought to go up to him and shake his hand whenever we get the chance, for keeping our city's springs and parks the jewels they are, in the setting of our marvelous town.

Eureka's loss -- two of the best

Editor:

We will soon be losing a couple of great folks who have made a real contribution to Eureka Springs. I'm talking about Steve Shell and Gerry Ganong.

These two super-charged individuals have worked hard ever since their arrival in town to support the arts and cultural events in a very big way. If I were to list all their accomplishments here, whether it be in theater, music or a host of other areas of endeavor, such a list might take up half the page.

Frankly, I don't know how the Ozarks Chorale is going to get along without Steve and Gerry. I don't know who is going to perform sacred solos in place of Steve. I don't know how anyone is going to organize and operate things like the Robert Burns Festival or Paper Moon Attractions as Gerry did. Who's going to marry all those folks like Steve did at Garden of Dreams? How many real babes are going to be left in town after Gerry's gone?

Steve has taken a conducting job in Oklahoma. No doubt, Gerry will be the brain-trust behind something neat as well. I'm going to miss them. I suspect many of you will as well.

So before another week or so passes, try shaking Steve's hand and giving Gerry a big hug to show them what they've meant to us.
