Eureka Springs -- At approximately 12: 13 a.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2008, Officer Trevor Hammons saw two people beside a Hwy 62 restaurant where people should not normally be at that time. He went to investigate and the two people immediately began running away. Officer Hammons caught one of the people, later identified as a 16 year old run-a-way juvenile from Michigan. The juvenile was in possession of several shopping bags full of items which appeared to have been stolen from a store. There were over one hundred packs of assorted brands of cigarettes, several packs of cigars, toothpaste, razors, Zig-Zags, beef jerky sticks and cash among other items. Officer Brian Williams then began checking all locations in town which would sell items like those in the bags. When he checked a downtown grocery, he found a pack of Zig Zag rolling papers on the ground. He then found an open window and upon looking inside noted jerky sticks on the floor which was the same brand as jerky sticks found in the juvenile's pockets.
The juvenile was transported to the police department and Detective J.J. Reddick was called in to investigate the burglary and theft. After questioning, the run-a-way juvenile was transported to the Carroll County Detention Center for temporary incarceration. The Michigan authorities were contacted so that they could begin the process of returning the juvenile to his parents.
The second person was not found but has been identified as a young adult who used to live in Eureka Springs but moved to Michigan with his parents. From statements made by the juvenile, it appears that the juvenile and the young adult stole a car in Michigan and came to Eureka Springs. A felony warrant will be sought for the arrest of the adult for Commercial Burglary, Class C Felony and Fleeing, Class A Misdemeanor.
