Bobby Conway

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

When Judge John Lineberger dismissed the case against the Eureka Springs School District on Aug. 4 over not allowing student Bobby Conway to play basketball with long hair, he did so because the school agreed it would no longer violate Bobby's civil rights. The hair could stay. When, despite all the above, Bobby showed up for practice this year, only to be told by a new coach he would have to get a haircut, he and his parents stood their ground despite pressure to cave in -- and he played in the last two games. It took a teenager to force the school to adopt fair and legal treatment for all its students, and for that we salute him.
