Walter Lee "Skip" Sands, Jr., 78, of Prairie Grove, died Aug. 29, at Regency Hospital of Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville.

He was born July 21, 1931 in Louisville, Ky., to Walter and Emma Sands.

Mr. Sands graduated from DuPont Manual High School, Louisville, Ky., in 1949 and received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1954. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Alpha Phi Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi.

He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1956 as a High Speed Radio Instructor at the Southeastern Signal School at Camp Gordon, Ga.

Mr. Sands worked for many years with the Western Actuarial Bureau in Louisville, Ky. and Insurance Services Offices in Chicago, Ill. before retiring to Holiday Island, later moving to Prairie Grove. He was an avid golfer and Chicago Bears fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lee Sands, Sr. and Emma Marie Stone Sands.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Siegel Sands, of the home; a daughter, Cecile M. Sands and husband Samuel A. Saxon III of Gainesville, Fla.; son, Walter L. Sands III, wife Lisa and grandchildren Robert Lee and Theresa Lynn Sands of Prairie Grove.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fayetteville under the direction of Moore's Chapel. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville, Ky.
