Rita (Schuck) Benson, 84, of Holiday Island, died unexpectedly on Sept. 4 in Eureka Springs. Rita was born April 20, 1925, in West Point, Iowa, one of eight daughters to Dr. Frank and Mabel Schuck. She attended the University of Iowa. She met her husband, Charles R. Benson, in Des Moines, Iowa. They were married for 60 years.

They raised three sons in Des Moines and Mason City, Iowa, and moved the family to Overland Park, Kan., in 1965. In 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Benson retired to Holiday Island where they lived happily for 27 years.

Rita had a passion for life's adventures, big and small. Together, Chuck and Rita traveled the world, exploring exotic locations such as Northern Africa, the Grecian Islands and the Amazon Jungle. Rita was an avid card player and sports fan, loving nothing more than a good game of bridge, or the successes of her Kansas City Chiefs, Royals and Kansas Jayhawks.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Nora Littlewood, Mary Ellen Hennessy, Joan Schuck; and son Charles Michael Benson.

She is survived by her husband; sons Mark Allen Benson (Joyce), Stephen Craig Benson (Cathy) and daughter-in-law Sharon Benson (Charles Michael); grandchildren Kate Benson Allen (Josh), Kelli Benson Koons (Jeff), and Alexander James Benson (Erica); and three great-grandsons, Luke, Henry, and Ben.

At Mrs. Benson's request, a traditional memorial service will not be held. Memorial contributions may be made to your local American Cancer Society in memory of her son, Charles Michael Benson.
