School system and Main Stage to offer after school program

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
EUREKA SPRINGS -- Eureka Springs schools, in partnership with the Main Stage Creative Community Center, recently launched the 21st Century Community Learning Center after school program.

The program is the result of the joint submission of an Arkansas Department of Education grant application. The five-year grant is specifically designed to provide a free comprehensive array of after school programs and services, initially for elementary and later for middle school students and their families.

The program is focused on the academic and social advancement of students through innovative learning techniques introducing creative dramatics and experiential art and performance, coupled with direct family support programs in literacy and social behavior.

Prime components will include: literacy education; mathematics remediation and tutoring; integrated health, nutrition and social skill development; organized recreational events and physical skill building; visual arts, music, creative movement, theater and cultural awareness; technology education; drug and violence prevention; and focused family support programs.

The after school program will run Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and also provide for some family-focused evening sessions. Since attendance is limited to a specific number and level of students the selection criteria is focused primarily on a student's academic needs. Information about the program and the selection process may be obtained through the school's administration office. Community input and assistance is encouraged and anyone wishing to discuss the program should call the Eureka Springs elementary school at 253-8704.

Guess you forget to tell them how you cut EK out after they made all the trips to Washington and spent 5 years building the relationships to get this grant for Eureka. And then invited you to partipate in such a good thing despite your non-involvement privously.

Copies of the grant can be obtained through AR Dept of Education, School District, Main Stage, Eureka Kids.

Did you thank Miss Barb for development of the programs?
