Be buffaloed

Lovers of Buffalo River history will enjoy an evening with the Buffalo National River Partners at the Boone County Public Library in Harrison on July 27 at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Jami Lockhart, Arkansas Archaeological Survey, will present "Historic Cemeteries: Old Questions, New Tools." Dr. Lockhart is Director of Archaeogeophysical Research and Geographic Information Systems Applications at the University of Arkansas.

He also serves as cooperating faculty in the University's Departments of Anthropology and Environmental Dynamics. His research interests include historic and prehistoric cultural landscape studies using digital technologies.

Pharmed out

Shocked that Arkansas has the worst teenage pain reliever abuse problem in the nation, Carroll County Sheriff Bob Grudek and his office have teamed up with St. John's in Berryville to become Operation Pill Box partners.

Operation Pill Box is a prescription pill disposal program kicking off July 28 at the Grassy Knob Fire Department.

Grudek and St. John's personnel will be on hand to accept prescription pills from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The pills will be placed in special containers and disposed of in compliance with DEA guidelines.

Flushing old medications or placing them in the trash is not recommended.

Four-wheelin'

Just Jeep N Seligman will be held in Seligman, Mo., July 31 and Aug. 1. Pure fun for jeepers includes a show, mud runs, obstacle courses, door prizes, poker runs, food, and music. There's also a swap meet and Jeep Corral for sellers or buyers.

The event is held at Ruby's Event Park, Hwy 37, north of Ruby's Store, south of Freedom Bank.

Poker runs daytime and twilight. $10 each run. Prizes will be given away for best of show, vintage, trail ready, peoples' choice, largest club attendance, farthest distance to attend. Award plaques will be given, and prizes include KC lights, 3000 lb. winches, high lift jacks, and much more. No alcohol allowed.

$$ for science class

Mini grants for science teaching materials are now available through the Carroll County Community Foundation (CCF) and Arkansas Community Foundation (ARCF) in partnership with DonorsChoose.org.

The 2010 Science Initiative for Middle Schools( SIMS) program in Arkansas is made possible by an endowed gift to ARCF from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

Mini grants ($500 or less) are available to public school teachers in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8, and may be used to purchase consumable and/or hands-on science materials; kits are permitted if they are grade standard based and meet the State Science Frameworks requirements.

Science teachers in grades 5, 6, 7 may use www.Donors Choose.org to submit project narrative and request for materials. Teachers must submit the project between July 10 and September 15. Projects submitted after September 15 will not qualify for this grant. For more information contact the CCCF Office at (479) 253 8203.

Local takes profile training

Dana Splichal with EXIT Pro Realty in Eureka Springs recently attended a training course on personality profiling. "The course provided great training that is very helpful personally and professionally," Splichal said.

The course, taught by nationally known trainer and author Angel Tucker, was recently given in Northwest Arkansas to help attendees discover each personality's strengths and challenges, and provide the skills and techniques necessary to identify the different types in only 60 seconds.

Struck by the light

Don't miss Niazi benefit

A classic Eureka-Style benefit including a live and silent auction for Shah Niazi is coming up Sunday, August 1, 5-9 p.m. at The Space (2 Pine Street, across from the Post Office).

The free event includes wine and food donated from favorite local restaurants and friends; as well as wonderful merchandise, art and services up for bidding.

A gorgeous 4x8 ft. rug from Shah's collection will be raffled. It's rich in reds, and retails for $1,000. Tickets are available prior to and during the event. No need to be present to win.
