According to his nominator, 79 year-old Don Gammie has run about 35 marathons and still holds the U.S. record for 3,000 meters in the 60-64 age group.

He grew up in South Africa where he was a champion high school miler in the mid-'40s and ran his first marathon in 3 hours and 11 minutes in New York City.

Don became the elder statesman of Athletes Unknown of the Dayton, Ohio area, a team known for practicing 10-15 miles weekly. Because Don has been such an inspiration to others, his wife Jean has organized a "Don Gammie Turkey Trot" run/walk in honor of his 80th birthday to benefit the Grassy Knob Fire Association.
