Lively Entertainment: Mind-blowing Marbin Thursday & this weekend's schedule

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Marbin, a sort of experimental, jazz-rock group based in Chicago, plays at Squid and Whale Pub on Thursday night in what should be one of the coolest live music experiences to roll through Eureka Springs in some time.

Marbin started in 2007 as an improvised music duo consisting of Israeli-American guitarist Dani Rabin and Israeli saxophonist Danny Markovitch.

Markovitch and Rabin met shortly after Markovitch had completed his military service as an infantry sergeant and Rabin had graduated from Berklee College of Music. Talk about a wide variety of backgrounds!

Since 2008, Marbin has been based in Chicago and has been performing all over the United States, playing over 300 shows a year with the accompaniment of drummer Justyn Lawrence and bassist Ian Stewart, making Marbin one of the busiest bands in the states.

They have released three albums: "Impressions of a City," as part of Paul Wertico's Mideast-Midwest Alliance, and two under the name Marbin.

The group -- whose members have won multiple Grammys with the Pat Metheny Group -- is currently signed to Moonjune Records and Management.

According to major publications in the US and around the world such as The Chicago Tribune, All About Jazz, The Examiner, Jazz Police, and Chicago Jazz Magazine, Marbin's use of new extended techniques, such as looping and prepared-guitar in song form, in addition to their compositions and approach to music, results in music that is innovative and genre-defying.

In addition to their regular schedule playing in top venues and festivals in the states (The Jazz Showcase, Magic Bag, Gilly's, Green Mill, Chi-town Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival), in September 2011, Marbin toured with fusion super group Scott Henderson, Mike Clark, and Jeff Berlin in a series of venues on the east coast and the midwest. In March 2012, Marbin toured with Allan Holdsworth's new trio that consists of Yellow Jackets' bassist Jimmy Haslip, and drummer Virgil Donati.
