Murder charges are pending against an 18-year-old Berryville man after a Eureka Springs woman was found lying in a pool of blood early on New Year's Eve.

Victor Hugo Acuna-Sanchez was arrested Monday night in connection with the death of Laura Acevez, according to a press release issued by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

Acevez, 21, was found in her home around 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. She was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Ark.

While executing a search warrant on Acevez's home Monday night, investigators found a .22-caliber round and evidence suggesting Acuna-Sanchez as a suspect, police said in a press release.

When police later visited Acuna-Sanchez's home, they found him hiding in the shower, with a .22-caliber handgun at his feet, authorities said.

Acuna-Sanchez was arrested on outstanding warrants for criminal mischief and violating a no-contact order and is currently being held at the Carroll County Detention Center. No bond has been set.

The gun was seized as evidence and later sent to the State Crime Lab, and Acevez's body has been sent to the Arkansas Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, authorities said.

The Sheriff's Office is awaiting the results of the autopsy and ballistic tests to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to pursue murder charges against Acuna-Sanchez.
