Beaver Bridge closed after flooding

The historic Beaver Bridge has been closed since May 24 because of flooding that left it submerged under water.
Holiday Island district manager Lawrence Blood said itís still uncertain when the bridge might be reopened.
"A lot of it has to do with any additional rain we may get, and when they open the gates to start releasing the water," Blood said. "We'll get an update a day or two days prior."
After the water has gone down, the bridge has to be inspected before it can be reopened.
"I've never seen a year with rain like this, but we're doing the best we can to try to keep it safe for everybody," Carroll County Judge Sam Barr said.
Some individuals have taken advantage of the opportunity to float across the flooded bridge in kayaks, but Holiday Island Fire Chief Bob Clave said that isnít wise.
"There's a lot of problems with being on that river right now, as high it is," Clave said. "There's a lot of debris out there that makes it unsafe."
Clave said it is up to the state transportation department to decide when to reopen the bridge.
"Right now they've got the dam closed, so we're not letting the water out yet," Clave said. "It looks like we're not going to get any rain for a week, so that will help."
