The Eureka Springs School Board accepted the resignation of board member Travis Holloway at its meeting Monday, July 13, and will appoint his replacement at the next meeting.

Holloway's wife was recently hired as an elementary teacher, which would create a conflict of interest if he remained on the board.

"The board has discussed some people, so we will reappoint someone at the next meeting to serve out Travis' term," superintendent Bryan Pruitt said. "This person we'll appoint will serve out the rest of the year, and they'll have to run again in March if they want to."

The school district is also looking for someone to fill a new position for the next year to comply with a state requirement for dealing with COVID-19.

"They're going to be our liaison that works with us on COVID, our contact with the Arkansas Department of Health," Superintendent Bryan Pruitt said.

He said the district would like to hire a licensed practical nurse for the position to work under the direction of the school's registered nurse.

"We want people to know to take that person very seriously, because it is a serious deal," Pruitt said. "That's another way we'll be proactive on COVID. We'll make sure that our public is notified on anything that comes our way."

Also at the meeting, the board approved the state audit and authorized electronic payments for the 2020 school year.

"We do all the automatic deposits for teacher salaries, our big insurance payment and teacher retirement," Pruitt said.

The board approved the school improvement plans for each school, which will be listed on the school district's website.

It approved the district family and community engagement plan, which is how the school spends its Title 1 funds.

The board also approved the hiring of Matt Eckman as a route driver and part-time bus mechanic and Billie Reed as a business teacher.

The school board's next regular meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, August 10.
