ESPD investigating 'skimmers' on gas pumps
The Eureka Springs Police Department is investigating a device that was apparently installed at the gas pumps of a local convenience store to record customers’ credit and debit card information.
“On September 10th, 2020, the Eureka Springs Police Department was notified by a Rapid Roberts technician of a device that had been installed in the gas pumps by a third party,” police chief Brian Young said in a news release posted to the department’s Facebook page.
“The device has been determined to be a malicious device and its purpose was to potentially record card numbers, and key strokes.
“It is currently unknown how long the device had been placed in two of the gas pumps. The investigation is currently ongoing.”
Thieves often attach such devices on gas pumps, ATMs and other machines. The devices known as “skimmers” can read the magnetic strip on a card and provide information such as names and card numbers to the thieves.
