Freshman Armer leads Lady Highlanders to win

Eureka Springs coach Ryan Sanchez is taking a realistic approach to a rebuilding season for the Lady Highlanders.

After losing five seniors from last season’s state tournament team, Sanchez hopes Eureka Springs can be a contender again next season, using this year as a building block for a team composed mostly of juniors.

“Going into the year, that's what my focus was with this group being primarily juniors who haven't played a lot of varsity minutes,” Sanchez said. “So it's more of a senior season goal mindset, I guess you could say. That’s just the truth of the situation.”

Last Friday, however, Lady Highlanders fans might have gotten a little glimpse into the future as Eureka Springs rolled to a 57-22 victory over Arkansas Arts Academy in Rogers.

Freshman Brandessa Armer scored 22 points for the Lady Highlanders while Mackenzie Loudermilk added 14 points.

“That definitely helped morale with our group this year,” Sanchez said.

Armer was expected to provide some help handling the ball for the inexperienced Lady Highlanders but has developed into a scoring threat as well. She had 12 points last Thursday in a loss to Life Way Christian Academy.

“Brandessa’s definitely developed and taken strides to owning that position for us this year,” Sanchez said.

Eureka Springs’ scheduled home games against Arkansas Arts Academy on Monday and Cotter on Tuesday were canceled. The Lady Highlanders will travel to Alpena on Thursday before hosting Life Way Christian on Friday.
