Lester shines in victory
Eureka Springs senior guard Matthew Lester was crowned as the school’s Mr. Basketball before last Friday night’s Homecoming game against Haas Hall Rogers.
Once the game tipped off, Lester looked every bit the part.
A four-year starter for the Highlanders, Lester was all over the court in Eureka Springs’ 70-35 victory over the Danes.
Lester finished with 22 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and seven steals.
“Matt was as good as he’s ever been,” Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo said of the four-year starter.
Lester made five of the Highlanders’ 14 three-pointers, including three in the final 2:08 of the first half.
Senior Teagan Farriester also made five three-pointers in six attempts and scored 15 points as the Highlanders shot 14 of 29 from behind the arc. Many of those three-pointers came on passes from Lester after he penetrated the Haas Hall defense.
“He’s getting so comfortable this year in terms of drawing help and then making the right read and getting rid of the basketball,” Rambo said. “Of course, we’ve got guys out there that can make shots.”
Senior forward Kegley Ertel added 11 points for Eureka Springs.
The Highlanders opened 2A-1 conference play Tuesday night, rolling to a 64-34 home victory over Alpena for their sixth consecutive win to open the season. Junior forward Dylan Johnson scored 22 points for Eureka Springs while Lester added 20 and Ertel scored 11. The Highlanders led 51-9 midway through the third quarter.
Eureka Springs will play at St. Paul on Thursday and at Lead Hill on Friday.
