Lady Highlanders win one they want

Thursday, December 23, 2021

If the Eureka Springs Lady Highlanders were only going to win one game last week, coach Kyle Farrar knew exactly which one he would prefer.

And things worked out the way Farrar hoped, as the Lady Highlanders held off Life Way Christian 27-24 on Friday, Dec. 17, at Highlander Arena. The win came three days after a 59-29 loss at Berryville on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Senior guard Mackenzie Loudermilk made two free throws in the final minute to clinch the win over Life Way.

“It kept getting closer and closer and it got to the fourth quarter where they were just fouling us, and we couldn’t buy [a made free throw],” Farrar said. “It didn’t matter who went up there, we couldn’t buy one. And it got to where they were making a few buckets and it got to 25-24. That was the only time the entire game where it was that close. And Mackenzie got fouled … She stepped up there and made two. That was without question the biggest free throws of the game.”

In the loss to Berryville, Eureka Springs fell behind 26-8 by the end of the first quarter and never got within striking distance. Loudermilk’s eight points led the Lady Highlanders.

Farrar said Eureka Springs used the Berryville game to prepare for Life Way Christian.

“We would like to have done better at a few things, taking care of the ball and making a few more shots,” Farrar said. “But we had said all week long ‘let’s use this game to get ready for Life Way.’ That’s all we were worried about and things couldn’t have worked out any better.”

Eureka Springs will get a midseason break before returning to action Jan. 4.
