Preston Lee Smith, a resident of Eureka Springs, was born Dec.29, 1964 in Eureka Springs, a son of Dr. Fred and Shirley Jean (Pyatt) Smith. He died on Friday, Jan. 18 in Fayetteville at the age of 43.
Preston is survived by his life-long companion, Lisa Rhine of the home; one sister, Diana Kay Delozier of Texas; one uncle, Bob Pyatt and wife Sue of Springdale; two aunts-in-law, Reba and Capitolia Pyatt both of Eureka Springs; two nephews; one niece; numerous cousins; other relatives; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 22 at the Nelson's Chapel of the Springs in Eureka Springs with Pastor Gene Gilmore officiating. Virginia Onstead Tackett, aged 88, of Holiday Island, widow of Lowell Tackett, died Monday, Jan. 14.
Born Nov. 12, 1919 to Charles Frederick and Isabel Emerick Onstead, she grew up in Hope.
An avid reader, she wrote book reviews and a column, "Book Notes," in the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock through the 1950s.
She was a secretary at the state Highway Department in Little Rock when she began attending law school at night, becoming a Highway Department lawyer from her graduation in 1965 until her retirement in 1976.
She served on the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women and the Criminal Code Revision Commission and was a member of the Arkansas Bar Association's House of Delegates.
Survivors are two sons, Dick Tackett and his wife, Toni, of Nashville, Tenn., and Fred Tackett and his wife, Patricia, of Topanga, Cal., and Eureka Springs, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Pulaski Heights Methodist Church in Little Rock by Griffin Leggett Rest Hills.
Ernestine Margarette Cash, a resident of Eureka Springs, was born Oct. 6, 1913 in Eureka Springs, a daughter of Ernest Allen and Georgia Emma (Boyd) Cash. She died on Jan. 11 in Berryville at the age of 94.
Miss Cash is survived by three sisters, Emma Joyce Cash and Dorothea Cash, both of Eureka Springs, and Opal Easley of Eagle Rock, Mo.; 11 nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James and Glenn Cash and one niece.
