As clear as a whistle -- Tillian Jones stands beside a whistling sculpture created last week by students and instructor Laurie Spencer at the Eureka Springs School of the Arts. The class created ceramic whistles and, on the last day of class, built the organic sounding sculpture. The structure had a built-in fire pit and when ablaze, rang out multiple pitches from the water whistles placed inside the pit. Photos submitted
ESSA to host fourth student reception

  The Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA) will host its fourth student art reception of the summer season on Friday, June 27 at 4 p.m. at the school's campus at 15751 US62W. The reception will display student work created in classes taught by painter Denise Ryan of Eureka Springs, calligrapher Charles Pearce of Eureka Springs, and ceramists Suzy Siegle and Mike Haley of Huntsville.

ESSA youth scholarships still available

  ESSA still has several kids' scholarships available for Youth Art Week beginning July 14. Youth sessions for ages 12 through 17 will include classes on Creative Dressmaking with Mary Tait, Sonte Carving taught by John Remmers, Stained Glass with Mike Gibson, Drawing/Graphics with Chris Fischer and Silk Screen art by Jamie Tait, which will also have a session for 7 through 11 year olds.

  Other classes for 7 through 11-year-old students will be taught by Vincent Reynolds, Beginning Drawing; Air Brush Painting by David Rush; and Working with Metal: Beatin', Slashin' and Bendin'.

HI Art Show calls for submissions

  The Holiday Island Art Guild is now accepting applications for its 20th annual Labor Day Art Show and Sale at The Barn on Holiday Island. Area artists are encouraged to enter 2- and 3-dimensional art work and photography. For details and entry forms, call Jean Veri at 253-8820.
