Donnie Raye Weems, a resident of Eureka Springs, was born Nov. 9, 1941, in Berryville, Ark., to George McKinley and Lola Pearl (Wolfinbarger) Weems. He departed this life on Christmas Eve in Fayetteville at the age of 70.

Donnie was a retired Senior Chief with the United States Navy. He spent the last ten years of his career with the Naval Investigative Service in Washington DC.

Donnie proudly served in three different tours of duty in Vietnam and aboard the USS McKean. He began his naval career as station keeper of the Naval Reserve Facility in Eureka Springs.

After retirement, he taught at North Arkansas Community College in Harrison, Ark., and worked many years in the bookkeeping department at the Eureka Inn.

Donnie was a member of the First Baptist Penn Memorial Church of Eureka Springs. He was a life member of the American Radio Relay League.

He loved music of all kinds, but especially old-time string band and bluegrass. He collected old radios.

On Nov. 16, 1962, he was united in marriage with Mary Jacqueline McCall, who survives him of the home. He is also survived by two sons, Erik E. Weems and wife, Patricia, of Richmond, Va.; Steven R. Weems and wife, Diane, of Eureka Springs; two daughters, Rachel E. Weems-Ernst of Rogers, Ark., and Barbara Mourglia and husband, Jared, of Eureka Springs; parents, McKinley and Lola Weems of Eureka Springs; four sisters, Sandra and Larry Clark of Fort Smith, Ark.; Karen and Dave Grulkey of Eureka Springs; Diane and Larry McClelland of Eureka Springs; Terri Weems of Eureka Springs; eleven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Kelley, and one brother, Howard Weems.

There will be no visitation. Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Nelson's Cahpel of the Springs with Rev. Jimmy Martin officiating. Interment will follow at the Shady Grove Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
