Highlanders notch 1st conference victory
Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo knew this season could include some growing pains after the Highlanders lost several key players from last year’s team that won 33 games and a regional tournament championship.
Still, Rambo was hopeful that the Highlanders can still be a factor in the 2A-1 conference race.
On Tuesday, the Highlanders took the first step with a 45-35 conference road victory at Decatur.
Sophomore Matthew Lester, who started as a freshman last season, scored 27 points to lead Eureka Springs. Lester scored eight points in the first quarter as the Highlanders jumped out to a 17-8 lead. He added 10 in the fourth quarter, all on free throws, as Eureka Springs held on for the win.
Senior Jackson Cross added 11 points for Eureka Springs (4-10, 1-2 2A-1).
Eureka Springs lost a nonconference road game, 53-42, at Mountainburg. Lester scored 31 points for the Highlanders but it wasn’t enough.
